FAQ & Rules

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hackathon?

It's an exciting, fast-paced, stimulating event where you turn a cool idea into something real in only 24 hours! It's like a marathon workshop for developers, designers, and entrepreneurs! It's also about meeting and getting to know cool people in the local community while doing something fun.

Who can participate?

HACKTIVE is open to everyone, from college students to professional designers and developers born to code, fueled by caffeine, and driven to innovate! To be considered a ‘student’, you must attend college/university full-time or part-time, except where permission is explicitly given. We encourage developers, designers, product managers, MBAs, and others to collaborate in teams.

Do I need to have a team or idea before registering?

Nope, you should register regardless! You can sign up as an individual or in teams of up to four. If you sign up as an individual, but would prefer to participate on a team, use the forum to connect with others and get inspired. Join in the discussion, share ideas, and find people that may be interested in the same ideas and want to form a team. Do I have to stay there for the entire time? You can come and go as you please, but all coding must be produced solely by team members, working on-site during the allotted hacking time.

How many people are allowed on one team?

Teams must consist of between one and four participants. Teams must submit a list of members by 11:59PM on Friday, September 20th, and all modifications to team composition must be verified by ACTIVE Network organizers.

What do I need to bring?

A laptop and charger is a good starting place. Bring a sleeping bag if you plan to sleep and any toiletries you may want to have on hand. Other than that, we provide food, facilities, power, and drinks. You’ll just need to worry about bringing the technology, great ideas, and the collective team expertise needed to build something great!

What if I’m a newbie?

Then, there’s no better way to get your feet wet! You don’t need to have ever attended a hackathon before to participate in HACKTIVE.

Is there going to be food?

Definitely. We’ll provide food throughout the event at no cost to participants, from more substantial meals to snacks for munching and code-crunching. Plenty of beverages will be provided during the competition as well, with no shortage of energy drinks! If you have a specific food allergy or other specific need, contact us and we'll try to find a way to make it work for you.

What time should I arrive at the event?

Check-in will start at 10am on Saturday morning. The event doesn’t officially kick off until 11:30am, but come early if you want to set up a specific hacking spot for your team, as this will be determined on a first come, first serve basis.

What will the sleeping arrangements be?

There won’t be any officially designated sleeping area, however there will be plenty of benches, seats, and beanbag chairs throughout if you want to catch some Z’s a quiet corner.

Can I start working before HACKTIVE begins?

No. All code must have been produced solely by team members, working on-site, after 12:00PM on Saturday, September 21st. However, you can begin brainstorming, planning, and strategizing now.

When are app submissions due?

Each team is permitted one submission that must be received by 12PM on Sunday, September 22nd. All code must have been produced solely by team members, working on-site, after 12:00PM on Saturday, September 21st.

How will demos work?

Be prepared to demo your app after the submission phase is complete. Demos should be no longer than 3 minutes. Demos take place in two rounds. Teams will be placed in one of three groups for the first round. The top fifteen teams will constitute the teams in the second round. First round demos will be three minutes of presentation. Second round demos will consist of three minutes of presentation and then two minutes of Q&A.

How will the apps be judged?

A panel of industry judges will judge the apps based on five equally-weighted criteria: Design, Effective use of the ACTIVE Network platform, Utility, Relevancy to the theme, and Originality of concept, each scored on a 10 point scale. Penalties may be assessed for going over the allotted demo time.

What kind of data is available for use during the hackathon?

Participants can use any of the publicaly available ACTIVE Network APIs listed on the ACTIVE Access website (http://developer.active.com/apis). In addition, you can also use any other publicly available API or dataset including Mashery API Network (http://developer.mashery.com/), Aetna Carepass APIs (https://developer.carepass.com/), etc.

Eligible individuals may enter this Contest without having to purchase anything (1) by visiting http://developer.active.com/hackathon_2013 and completing the free online entry and registration form in accordance with the instructions provided during the Registration Phase, and (2) by attending the technology design session held at 330 A Street, San Diego, CA 92101 on September 21, 2013 through September 22, 2013 (or if an Active Entrant, such Active Entrant may attend the technology design session remotely) and submitting to the Sponsor an innovative, creative, functional and original application (the “Application”) that integrates with the Sponsor’s technology platform during the Submission Phase.

All required fields on the online entry and registration form must be completed. Incomplete entries will not be accepted and will be automatically rejected. Entrants must be the registered subscriber of the email account from which the entry is made.

An Entrant may enter individually or as part of a team with up to a maximum of four (4) members and each member must be from the same entrant category as further described in Section 1 above. If entering as a team, each team member must separately register as described above, otherwise the entire team shall be ineligible to participate in this Contest. At the time of registration, each team member must designate that he or she is part of a team and identify his or her team member(s). The team members identified at the time of registration shall be final and may not be modified or otherwise change in composition during the Promotion Period (as defined below) by Entrants. Each team member shall be responsible for the accurate identification of his or her team members. In the event of any discrepancy in team composition, such discrepancy shall be resolved by the Sponsor in its sole discretion and such decision shall be final and binding. In the event any team member is disqualified for any reason, the entire team will also be disqualified.

During the Submission Phase, Active Entrants may attend the technology design session and submit the Application remotely. Except for Active Entrants, remote submission of Application will not be accepted and is void. Except for Active Entrants, only Entrants who are present in person at the technology design session during the Submission Phase may submit the Application. An Entrant may submit more than one Application during the Submission Phase. The Application must be an original work of the Entrant and/or his or her team that includes a technical integration with the Sponsor’s technology platform, using the Sponsor’s application programming interfaces (“API”) available at http://developer.active.com/ or other method described on the Sponsor’s developers website at http://developer.active.com/. The Application (by itself or as part of another application) cannot have been publicly available as a Sponsor integration prior to September 21, 2013. For the avoidance of doubt, any beta, demo, trial or incomplete version of an Application that was available publicly on a website or via an alternative delivery mechanism such as Apple Inc.’s iTunes App Store, Google Inc.’s Google Play, Research in Motion Limited’s BlackBerry App World or other channel prior to September 21, 2013 is ineligible. In addition, any Application with respect to which the Sponsor has provided any substantial development assistance is ineligible. The Application must be executable so that the judging panel may evaluate it using the Sponsor’s production service. For iOS applications, the Sponsor will provide a list of IDs (UDIDs) for the devices that the judging panel will be using to evaluate the Application. The Application must, at a minimum, support English language use but may also support other languages at the discretion of the Entrant. The Application must be accompanied by a demo describing and demonstrating the Application, which will be the primary basis on which the judging panel will evaluate the Application. The demo should be no longer than three minutes. The demo and the Application cannot violate the Sponsor’s Terms of Use located at http://www.activenetwork.com/information/terms-of-use.htm, including but not limited to user content and code of conduct requirements therein. Any Application that violates the Sponsor’s Terms of Use, contains sexual, violent, abusive, harassing, offensive or insulting content, enables or promotes any illegal activity or infringes any other party’s legal or intellectual property rights may be disqualified. Any determination as to the eligibility of an Application will be made by the Sponsor in its sole discretion and will be final and binding.

By submitting your entry, you agree that the Application conforms to the guidelines and content restrictions set forth above and that the Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may remove the Application and disqualify you from this Contest if it believes, in its sole discretion, that the Application fails to conform to such guidelines and restrictions.

By entering, Entrants represent and warrant that the Applications that they submit:

•           Are their own original creations;

•           Do not infringe any other person’s or entity’s rights; and

•           Have not been submitted previously in a contest or promotion of any kind.

Entries must be submitted by the original creator(s). Applications created by someone other than you or your team but submitted by you will be disqualified. You must be the sole owner (or if part a team, joint owner) of the copyright of any Application submitted. Your submission of each Application is your guarantee that you are the author and copyright holder of such Application.

By entering, Entrants grant a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable, perpetual license to the Sponsor and its affiliates to edit, adapt, make derivative works from, broadcast, publish, reproduce, install, integrate, perform, demonstrate, evaluate, test and otherwise use any part or all of the Applications submitted, and may use them for advertising, promotional, commercial and/or any other purposes, including by not limited to, integrating, embedding, or merging the Applications into or with the Sponsor’s products and services and making copies of the Applications for such integration purposes and for distributing and sublicensing them, in any and all media now or hereafter devised worldwide in perpetuity without additional compensation, notification or permission, unless prohibited by law. By entering this Contest, Entrants agree to have their submitted Application (including, without limitation, any screenshots, animations and video clips), used and displayed, either singularly or in combination with others and in any size, on the Sponsor’s website, social media, and print materials without any fee or other form of compensation due at any time for so long as desired by the Sponsor. Credits, descriptions or titles, if any, used with the Application are in the Sponsor’s sole discretion. In the event that ownership of any Application submitted is challenged in any manner by any person, the Sponsor may disqualify that Application and will discontinue use of the Application.

Online access and an email account are required in order to participate in this Contest. Many public libraries, retail businesses and others offer free access to computers and a number of Internet service providers and other companies offer free email accounts.

Entries generated by script, macro or other automated means and entries by any means which, in the opinion of the Sponsor, are intended to subvert the entry process will be void. All entries, including Applications submitted, become the property of the Sponsor, and none will be acknowledged or returned.

No third party entry or entry through Contest service permitted. Any individual who attempts or otherwise encourages, directly or indirectly, the entry of multiple or false contact information under multiple identities, multiple email accounts, or uses any device or artifice to enter or encourage, directly or indirectly, multiple or false entries, as determined by the Sponsor, will be disqualified. If, in the Sponsor’s opinion, there is any suspected or actual evidence of electronic or non-electronic tampering with any portion of this Contest, or if a computer virus, bug, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical difficulties, or failures compromise or corrupt or affect the administration, integrity, security, fairness, or proper conduct of this Contest, and/or this Contest is not capable of being conducted as described in these Official Rules, the Sponsor shall have the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the entry process and to void any entries submitted fraudulently, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify or suspend this Contest, and to select the prize winner from all non-suspect entries received prior to action taken, or as otherwise deemed fair and appropriate by the Sponsor. If this Contest is cancelled, modified, suspended or terminated, notice will be posted on http://developer.active.com/hackathon_2013.
